Life has a way of surprising us, often taking unexpected turns and presenting us with opportunities for growth and transformation. One such journey that many women embark upon is transitioning out of what was once thought to be their “forever” career.
Whether driven by shifting priorities, the desire to pursue our passions, or a yearning for new challenges, this transition can be an emotional rollercoaster filled with excitement and uncertainty. More and more women are boldly stepping away from the traditional workforce, choosing to follow their passions, explore better financial opportunities, or recognize that the increasing cost of daycare makes staying at home to raise their little ones the most rewarding choice.
In this blog post, we will explore the empowering process of embracing change, pursuing new paths, and finding fulfillment beyond the confines of a “forever” career.
1. Embrace Your Evolving Self: Acknowledge that as individuals, we naturally evolve and grow, and our desires and aspirations may shift over time. Embracing the idea that our career paths are not set in stone allows us to open ourselves up to new possibilities and opportunities for personal and professional growth.
2. Reflect on Your Motivations: Take time to reflect on what no longer resonates with you in your current career. Ask yourself important questions: Are you still passionate about what you do? Do you feel fulfilled? Identifying the reasons behind your desire for change will help guide you toward a new path that aligns with your values and aspirations.
3. Explore Your Passions and Talents: Transitioning out of a “forever” career opens up a world of opportunities to pursue your passions and utilize your unique talents. Consider what activities bring you joy, what topics ignite your curiosity, and what skills you have that can be transferred to different industries or roles. I have not transitioned out of my “forever” career as a nurse, however, I have embarked on two of my passions and I’ve turned them into a business. I have a love for photography and helping people understand and manage their money responsibly. I have a photography business and a financial coaching and education business, along with my “9-5” nursing career.
4. Identify Transferable Skills: Take note of the skills and experiences gained in your previous career that can be leveraged in new endeavors. Communication, leadership, problem-solving, and adaptability are just a few examples of transferable skills that can provide a strong foundation for your next chapter. Many of the skills we gain from our first career/job will help us in our next career, job, business venture.
5. Seek Support and Guidance: Connect with other women who have gone through similar transitions or seek mentorship from those who have successfully reinvented their careers. Surround yourself with a supportive network that encourages and inspires you as you navigate this new journey. Don’t be afraid to tell people about your desires and dreams and see if they have suggestions on how to get there. Remember though, your journey won’t be the same as everyone else’s.
6. Build a Strong Network: Networking is vital during a career transition. Attend industry events, join professional organizations, and engage in online communities to expand your network and explore new opportunities. Surrounding yourself with like-minded individuals can open doors and provide valuable insights. Don’t be afraid to reach out to people as ask questions, you won’t get answers if you don’t ask. Get comfortable with being uncomfortable, it is how we grow.
7. Develop a Transition Plan: Create a roadmap for your career transition by setting clear goals and milestones. Break down the process into manageable steps, such as researching new industries, updating your skills through courses or certifications, and building a strong personal brand through networking and online presence. Set up a financial goal of when you will be ready to transition and create a “leave” date and do your best to stick to it.
8. Embrace Lifelong Learning: Continuously invest in your personal and professional development. Acquire new skills, stay updated on industry trends, and remain open to learning and growth. This mindset will keep you adaptable and ready to embrace new opportunities that come your way. Investing in yourself is one of the best investments there is! I am always listening to personal growth and business podcasts and signing up for free and paid courses to continue developing and learning new skills.
9. Embrace Your Courage: Embracing change requires courage and resilience. Trust yourself and your abilities to navigate the unknown. Embrace the excitement that comes with stepping outside your comfort zone and embarking on a new path. Embrace your fears, hey, I wrote a whole blog post and recorded a podcast on this very topic! You have the choice to take a different fork in the road of life, and that includes in your career. You get to choose whether to stay at a particular job, choose a different career, or leave the workforce altogether. It’s important to remember that leaving your job in a professional manner opens up the possibility of returning to that career in the future. While you may not necessarily be welcomed back to the exact same position, there is often room to reenter the field and pursue your passion there once again.
As humans, we have an innate need for change and variety in our lives. We thrive on new experiences, challenges, and growth. Stagnation can lead to boredom, complacency, and a sense of dissatisfaction. That’s why it’s essential to embrace change and seek new opportunities from time to time.
Embracing change allows us to expand our horizons and tap into our full potential. It keeps life exciting, stimulates personal and professional growth, and helps us become more adaptable and resilient individuals. So, don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and embrace change, for it is through change that we can truly thrive.
Embarking on the journey of entrepreneurship and starting a small business from home to prioritize being present with your little ones can bring tremendous rewards. However, it’s important to acknowledge that this decision is neither easy nor simple. It involves making numerous choices and embracing certain sacrifices along the way. It’s crucial not to underestimate the weight of these decisions and the impact they can have on your life, family, and future.
Transitioning out of what was supposed to be your forever career, whether that is education, healthcare, or something else, is a courageous and empowering decision. By acknowledging your evolving self, exploring new passions, leveraging transferable skills, and building a supportive network, you can confidently navigate this transition and find fulfillment in a new chapter of your professional life.
Embrace the journey, trust in your abilities, and entrust in the endless possibilities that lie ahead. Remember, it’s never too late to pursue your dreams and create a career that truly aligns with who you are. That being said, it is never too early either. Many women say they are “not old enough” to embark on entrepreneurship or start their own business. I say, age is just a number, find what makes you happy and do that.
